著名聖誕頌歌「快樂聖誕12日」(Twelve Days of Christmas)的來源雖已無從查考，但由於今年物價及工資均上漲，要購買歌詞中提及的所有象徵物品給心愛的伴侶，可能快樂不起來，因為需要付出更高的代價。
根據PNC財富管理(PNC Wealth Management)匯整的年度「聖誕節物價指數」(Christmas Price Index)顯示，要一次買齊歌詞中出現的364件物品，從第一日的梨子樹及鷓鴣，到第12日的12個鼓手表演，總共約需7萬8100元。
歌詞中所出現的物品如果數量不增加、全都只買一個，也需要1萬9507元，較去年的1萬8921元增加3.1%。若透過網路購買更貴，364件物品約12萬8886元，較去年的12萬5767元增加2.5%，若網路交易全都只買一次，也要3萬1249元。
PNC自1984年開始計算聖誕節費用，雖然這是一種幽默的比喻，但PNC表示，指數可反映實際的經濟趨勢。
造成花費大增原因之一，是由於今年最低工資的調漲，使得歌詞中第八日「八名女傭擠牛奶」費用也由41元漲至47元。PNC投資主管杜尼甘(Jim Dunigan)說，「自1997年以來一直沒漲」，「好消息是如從事女傭擠牛奶工作，工資在2008年至2009年還會繼續漲」。
此外，食品費用也增加，使得歌詞中第六日的「六隻鵝」價格也由三百元漲至360元。而由於黃金價格飆漲，也使得第五日的「五個金戒指」達395元，較去年的325元增加21.5%。
杜尼甘表示，「今年聖誕節物價指數的金戒指價格反映了消費者物價指數商品價格不斷上漲的整體趨勢」，此外，「對通貨膨脹及美元幣值的逐漸擔憂，已導致投資人轉向較安全的黃金市場」。
不過，並非歌詞中的所有物品都漲價。例如鷓鴣15元、斑鳩40元及法國母雞40元，價格與去年相同，而七隻天鵝4200元、九個跳舞女士的表演約4759元，費用也不變。
